Please note: if your Admin Interface shows options other than V3 and Auto-blocking, this feature is not available for your account.
In response to evolving US privacy laws like COPPA, CPRA, and various state-level regulations (California, Connecticut, Utah, etc.), Usercentrics has introduced the Age Verification Gate. This feature helps you protect younger users and avoid regulatory risks by gating your website's consent flow based on the user's age. It ensures that only the legally appropriate consent experience is shown to each visitor.
Key Benefits
- Risk Reduction: Avoid heavy regulatory penalties and class-action risks.
- No-Code Implementation: Easily managed directly through your existing Usercentrics Admin Interface without developer resources.
Phase 1: Enabling the Age Gate & Rules
To get started, navigate to the Appearance tab in your Usercentrics Admin Interface.
- Activate the Gate: Under the Layout sub-tab, find the "Age Verification Gate" section and toggle the switch to On.
- Set the Threshold: Use the dropdown to select your primary age threshold (e.g., 18+). If you have specific requirements, check "Use custom age threshold."
- Redirect Underage Users: In the Redirect URL field, enter the web address where users should be sent if they do not meet the age requirement (e.g., a child-friendly version of your site or an educational resource).
Phase 2: Styling Your Gate
You want the Age Gate to feel like a natural part of your website. Under Appearance > Styling, you can customize the visual overlay.
- Overlay Design: Adjust the Color (using a Hex code) and the Opacity (transparency) to ensure your website content is appropriately dimmed behind the gate.
- Logo Branding: Upload your company logo via a URL so users immediately recognize your brand. You can also adjust the logo position and add "Alt-Tag" text for accessibility.
- Button Colors: Specifically define the background and text colors for the "Over Age" and "Under Age" buttons to match your brand's palette.
Phase 3: Customizing Content & Labels
The language you use should be clear and easy for all users to understand. Navigate to the Content tab to edit the messaging.
- Main Message: Under the Age Verification sub-tab, you can write a custom Title and Description that explains why you are asking for this information.
- Button Labels: Click on the Labels sub-tab to change the text appearing on the buttons (e.g., changing "I'm over 18" to "I am an adult").
Tip: Use the "Edit & Translate" feature to ensure these prompts appear in the correct language for your various US regions.
What Your Users Will See
Once configured, users visiting from regulated regions will see a clean, professional overlay. They cannot interact with the site or the standard consent banner until they have made a selection.
- If they are over the age limit: The gate disappears, and the content of the page is shown
- If they are under the age limit: They are redirected to your specified "Underage URL."
