Implementing Usercentrics CMP using Google Tag Manager (GTM) is quick and easy.
In this guide we'll take you through the steps required to do the following:
- Obtain the Usercentrics CMP tag template
- Create the Usercentrics CMP tag.
- Configure the Usercentrics CMP tag.
- Configure tags to be "consent aware".
Step 1: Obtain the Usercentrics CMP tag template
To get started you'll need the Usercentrics CMP tag template. In the next step you will create a tag based on this template which will make it easy to implement and enabled settings on the Usercentrics script.
Please follow the following instruction to obtain the template.
In your GTM workspace, select Templates1 and click the Search Gallery button2.
Enter "Usercentrics" in the search field and select the Usercentrics CMP tag.
Click the Add to workspace button.
Confirm by clicking the Add button on the confirmation dialog.
Step 2: Create the Usercentrics CMP tag
When you've obtained the template, you can create a tag based on this template.
Please follow the following instructions to create the Usercentrics CMP tag.
In your GTM workspace select Tags1 and click the New button2.
Click inside the Tag Configuration field3 and select Usercentrics CMP4 from the list of tag types, which you will find under the Custom section.
Step 3: Configure the Usercentrics CMP tag
Now that you've created the tag, it needs to be configured.
You have access tot he following settings:
- Select whether you want to enter a Settings-ID or a Ruleset-ID and enter the it below the selection.
- Select whether you want to use version 2 or 3 of the banner. We obviously recommend using the latest version.
- You can define a specific language to display the banner in a specific language, for example "de", or use the default setting: "auto". When this is selected the banner will be assigned the language that you've selected as your preferred browser language, or fallback to the default if this specific language isn't added in the Admin.
Please use ISO 3166-2 country codes for region values.
For the United States of America you can use state-specific regions, for example "US-CA" for California.
If a specific default consent state applies to multiple regions, you can add a comma-separated string of regions to the Region field. - If you intend the Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) you can enable it here.
Since only tcStrings generated with the latest version are valid this will always be the latest version. - If your website makes use of the Accelerated Pages Framework (AMP), you need to enable this here.
- Here you can select whether you want to use Google Consent Mode (enabled by default) and add consent mode specific settings.
-
Wait for update
Here you can configure how many milliseconds tags must wait for consent before firing tags.
This setting is applicable for visitors who already consented on a previous page or prior visit to the website. In most cases 500 milliseconds should be sufficient.
For more information please check asynchronous tools. -
Redact ads data
This setting controls whether personal data can be used for targeted advertising.
You can select True, False, or Dynamic (match ad_storage). The latter is the default and recommended value. This ensures that ad data redaction is matched to whether consent has been given to utilize ad storage. -
Enable URL passthrough
When using URL passthrough, a few query parameters may be appended to links as users navigate through pages on your website.
This essentially allows you to pass data to the next page without using cookies if consent wasn't granted to use browser storage. -
Advertiser Consent Mode
When this is enabled consent data can be inferred from TCF consent data. -
Default Consent State
Here you can add region specific consent mode settings, by default all permissions are set to denied prior consent.
For more information please check Adjust Tag Behavior.
-
Wait for update
- Assign the tag a trigger by clicking in the Triggering field.
- Select the Consent Initialization - All Pages trigger.
- Assign the tag a name and save it using the Save button.
Step 4: Configure tags to be "consent aware"
Now please follow the additional steps from our documentation to adjust the tags in your Google Tag Manager in order to block them until consent was given by the users: GTM Implementation Guide.
